I’m Date◎Yume, a male member. I’ve never picked up women either. Maybe I’ve just never been in an environment where that was an option.

I’m Flagmaker, a column writer. I don’t do it anymore, but about five years ago, I used to try “penguin pickup” at clubs. It’s a pickup line where you approach someone and say, “Um…I’m looking for a little penguin about this size…” Then you keep pushing the penguin angle: “I’m looking for someone to help me find a penguin,” “Do you even like penguins?” or “Want to go look for penguins together?” Since it’s a club, I’d be shouting “penguin, penguin” at the top of my voice.

My name is Shingo Lee (Shingori), and I’m a male member. I assume you’re asking about male members, right? I do it myself, but I don’t recommend it because it tends to make a lot of people resent you, haha. That would be a rather curt answer, so I’d like to share a little information in case it’s useful to those who took the time to read this. Since external links aren’t allowed, I’ll keep it brief. There are several types of pickup: 1. Approaching women on the street—“suto-nan” (street pickup) 2. Using dating apps—“neto-nan” (online pickup) 3. Approaching women at events—“ibe-nan” (event pickup) 4. Approaching someone while pretending it’s a coincidence—“sute-nan” (stealth pickup) Very few people still do the old-fashioned Showa-era style of pickup, such as calling out, “Hey, are you free? Want to hang out?” Surprisingly, there are techniques based on psychology and similar fields that can improve your success rate. For example, there’s the “time-limit method.” This is a way to invite a woman who has stopped to listen to you into a café. If you say, “Let’s go have coffee there now,” she may become guarded. But if you say, “I’m meeting a friend at the station in 30 minutes, so why don’t we have coffee at a café for just 20 minutes?” she’s more likely to agree because she feels reassured that it will be over in 20 minutes, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Using techniques like these, pickup means things progressing with mutual consent. That said, street pickup involves approaching women who aren’t interested and causing them a nuisance, so I do not recommend it. For the record, I don’t think the method taught by the instructor introduced by Riichi-san works at all, and I’ve never heard of anyone using it, haha. Most likely, that person didn’t want to give away their know-how for free and made something up—or perhaps was joking. Touching a complete stranger, including leaning in close to her ear, is a crime, so please don’t imitate it. I sincerely hope the person who asked this question enjoys a wonderful life without making anyone resent them.

I’m Kazu, a male member. I don’t pick up women. I find it extremely unpleasant when salespeople approach me on the street, so I have no desire to become one of those people myself. I’m not into being looked at by strange women as if I were a cockroach.

I’m Hikōki, a male member. I only ever approached women outdoors—on the street or at the beach—when I was a student or in my early twenties. That said, I was a fairly serious? pickup artist, so I couldn’t bring myself to approach women randomly. As a result, time would pass without me managing to talk to anyone, and my sample size was extremely small—about one out of one or one out of two attempts. Since the denominator was so small, my success rate was almost 100%. It was usually just a denominator of one. Sometimes, I ended up with a denominator of zero. These days, I don’t approach women outdoors at all. Indoors, I might do so if the opportunity presents itself... I suppose.
