I’m meeting a woman for the first time. She’s a 23-year-old college student in Type C. If we don’t click and it ends up being dinner only (no intimacy), what would be a reasonable allowance? We’ll be having French cuisine at a hotel, and it’ll cost about ¥20,000 per person including drinks. Of course, I assume it depends on her level, but I’m in my 50s.

At Universe Club, the first date is generally a meal together. The rule is to give the woman at least ¥10,000 at that time—not ¥5,000 to ¥10,000, but ¥10,000 or more. If you give her ¥10,000 during the meal but the two of you don’t click and part ways after dinner only, then that ¥10,000 is all she receives. There’s no rule requiring you to give her anything extra. So regardless of her level, you simply give her the ¥10,000 specified by the rules. If you meet through a dating app or somewhere other than Universe Club, I assume you discuss the amount with the other person in advance.

The club’s rules state that ¥10,000 must be given upfront for transportation. Whether you have an adult relationship (intimate) or not, what you do after that is entirely up to you.

Regardless of the other person’s level, I’d suggest agreeing on ¥10,000 for the first meeting right away. If you don’t click, you can simply go home after the meal. From the second meeting onward, decide together. When negotiating the terms, be clear about whether the ¥10,000 is included or whether it’s an additional amount.
