I’ve met a business owner who has a wonderful personality. He’s in his late 30s to early 40s, but he has age-related body odor. He’s very image-conscious, so is there a tactful way to get him to address it without hurting his feelings?

It’s a pretty difficult situation. You get used to smells, so you may not even notice them anymore. If you can’t stand it even after showering before sex, you might consider talking to him about his age-related odor—perhaps while being prepared to end things if necessary. If he’s wealthy, he might even be willing to spend money treating it. There’s also a chance he could get angry and end things, so the decision is up to you. If you’re bothered by someone’s body odor, your body may be instinctively giving you a yes or no—deciding whether you could be intimate with this person or whether it’s impossible. So it might be okay not to force yourself... Maybe your genes are telling you no.

How about wearing matching fragrances? Fabric sprays could work too (*´︶`*)ノ

The moment you’re alone together, just suddenly spray him with 8×4 for MEN. Wouldn’t that work? Don’t even give him a chance to object—just spray him. He’ll probably be confused and ask, “Why?” You could say: “It’s just basic grooming. You don’t smell bad, but sometimes you do get a little sweaty. So from now on, I’m going to spray you as soon as we enter the room. But next time, please spray yourself in the restroom before we meet. If I think you haven’t, I’ll spray you again without warning. It’s basic grooming.” Then keep explaining it to him along those lines. Even if he asks, “Why are you doing that when I don’t smell?” just keep repeating: “It’s basic grooming.” “Spraying yourself even when you don’t smell is good manners.” If he loses his temper, I think it’s fine to end things there. You could just consider it lucky if he starts spraying himself beforehand. Some men may get angry, so make sure you’re prepared to run, just in case. If he blows up, get away.

Tell him right away. If his smell bothers you, you’ll gradually start disliking him, and that won’t be good for either of you. If he’s truly a good person inside, he should be open to opinions and perspectives he hadn’t considered himself. Having a broad mind means being able to accept things that are different from you. If he’s wonderful on the inside and has a refined sense of beauty, he should accept it. If he doesn’t, then he simply isn’t as put-together on the inside as he seems. This might actually be about me. If “ANA,” “yakiniku,” and “Juyondai” ring a bell, maybe I’m the one you’re talking about, lol.

He’s at an age where this could be a turning point for improving that aspect of his life. If you became the catalyst for him to change, he might be grateful for it for the rest of his life—especially if you’re his papa (a male supporter). However, becoming such an unforgettable blessing means addressing something no one else would say and no one outside his family could touch on. You’d have to be as close as a fiancée to bring it up. Even as his girlfriend, it would be extremely difficult… He might not accept it unless it came from someone he truly trusts and cares about. You may only have these three options: 1. Bring it up, prepared for the possibility that the relationship may end. 2. Hold back until you become much closer. 3. Keep holding back for as long as you continue seeing each other. The tricky part is that he may not realize it after being told just once—and especially not if you only mention it casually. So finding the right way to communicate it will be very difficult.

What I’d like to point out first is that “not hurting the other person” is essentially the same as “not getting hurt yourself.” At least, that’s how I see it. No, I’m not making fun of you. It’s just my personal philosophy in life: as long as you’re focused on “not hurting the other person,” you won’t move forward. To resolve this—or rather, the wording may sound strange—you need to make yourself the “bad guy.” In your case, for example, you could start with something like: “I’m really sensitive to smells, so I tend to worry about my own scent. I don’t want Kenji (not his real name) to dislike me, so please be honest with me.” Then use that as an opportunity to talk openly about each other’s scent. How does that sound? You may find this hard to believe, but Kenji (not his real name) might actually be thinking the same thing. In my limited experience with several women, quite a few of them have had noticeable odors, even when they were young—especially when we were in that position. That’s why I say, “If I ever smell bad, make sure you tell me,” so we can both be aware of each other’s scent. I’ll say it again: start by making yourself the bad guy. As long as you’re worried about not hurting the other person, you won’t make even a millimeter of progress.

Once we’ve gotten a little closer, I’d gently and honestly point out your age-related body odor, tell you I want you to be perfect, and give you some deodorant spray and Mintia mints.

Try saying you want to go to a curry restaurant every time you meet. They’ll probably get the hint.
