I’m a 51-year-old man. I recently went on a first date with a 25-year-old woman who works for a company, but she spoke to me casually the entire time. Is that normal at Universe Club?

I actually love it when someone speaks casually with me. With someone I thought things might continue with, I asked them to speak casually around our third meeting. But having them do it from the very first meeting would feel a little strange, wouldn’t it?

There used to be a female employee at a McDonald’s in Odaiba who spoke to customers in a very casual, overly familiar way, and it became something of a topic. Customer: “One ___, please.” Employee: “What about fries?” Customer: “Huh? …Fries too, please.” Employee: “Got it. What would you like to drink?” … Apparently, that’s how the exchange went. People who speak casually to customers seem to be everywhere, but since it became a topic of conversation, I assume it was unusual at the time. Compared with that, I’d say speaking casually on a date is perfectly possible. If you don’t like it, you can simply choose not to continue seeing them. And just because you encountered one person like that, I don’t think it’s really worth posting a question here. If you had dated three people and all three spoke to you that way, then sure, I could understand posting about it. That would be the day the “Casual-Speech Universe” was born. (Does that mean the staff would have to speak casually too?)

The “friends’ café,” where the staff speak casually to customers, became quite a topic of conversation. In terms of leaving an impression on you, I suppose the casual language did the trick. If they use too much polite language, it feels overly businesslike, so a moderate amount of casual talk is probably best. Just think of it as having a spell cast on you to make you feel younger.

I’ve never met a woman who spoke casually from the very beginning. Just chalk it up to bad luck, and if you don’t like it, end things and make an offer to someone else. There are all kinds of people out there, so whether you meet a good one is ultimately down to luck. Even at hostess clubs or girls’ bars, it’s rare for someone to suddenly speak casually to you, so I’d say you just had bad luck. That said, if it were Fuu, I might be able to put up with the casual speech if she had a cute, endearing side, was incredibly beautiful, or turned out to be surprisingly attentive in bed. Since this is papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), I might still consider dating her.

Embarrassingly, it’s been seven years since I joined. I haven’t made an enormous number of offers, but I’ve made a decent amount. According to my own observations, nearly 20% of the women speak to me pretty casually. Maybe I’m simply not being taken seriously. That said, even when a woman uses a casual tone, some of them make me feel uncomfortable, while others actually feel more approachable and familiar. Perhaps the person asking the question isn’t used to being casually approached by younger women in everyday life? No, I’m not making fun of you. Try looking at it from a slightly different perspective: a younger woman may speak casually because she feels comfortable with you. I understand why it might feel strange, but keep in mind that there could be another explanation and observe her a little longer. The woman I’ve been closest to lately is a company employee in her mid-to-late twenties. She speaks casually, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I suppose a lot of it comes down to her personality. I never imagined that, at my age, a woman more than 30 years younger than me would call me by a nickname—one she came up with herself. Especially when she whispers it while we’re in bed, it works better on me than any medication, at least below the waist.

Maybe I upset my wife, because for several dozen minutes she kept repeating “That’s so gross” dozens of times—“Everything you do is gross.” I’m Paper Airplane, and I’m starting to lose my confidence. Even my pets look down on me, so naturally the women from the club do too. They summon me with a two-character LINE message, and I happily rush over... I’ve never really worried about whether to use casual or polite speech, so I don’t think it’s something you need to stress over. I speak to my daughter, the women from the club, and even people who summon me with two-character LINE messages in pretty much the same way. Even from the very first day, if there’s mutual interest and familiarity, you probably won’t find either polite or casual speech awkward once the conversation gets lively. It’ll naturally shift between the two, and you’ll be able to get absorbed in the conversation and adapt smoothly as you go...

I’m inexperienced too. It’s probably not common, but there are occasionally people who have an unusual sense of personal boundaries with others.
