Haha, yeah, some people use air fresheners.
I’m pretty sensitive to smells too, so I’m not really a fan.
Strong scents give me a headache. I guess people who use them don’t notice how overpowering they are.
Whenever I get in a car like that, I just open the windows!（笑）

I think it would be a good idea to buy them a deodorizing spray that you find tolerable and give it to them as a gift.
You could say something like:
“Febreze’s scent is a little too strong for me, and it’s hard to deal with. I’m quite sensitive to smells, so I’m sorry. I thought this one might be okay, so I bought it. Would you mind trying it next time?”
It might feel unpleasant to hear that from someone you’ve just met, but if you’ve met several times and have become close, I think it’s better to explain it properly. They may ultimately appreciate your honesty.

Febreze leaves more of a scent behind than you’d expect, so this might be better.
Then hand him an unscented deodorizer.
If you haven’t completely covered up the smell, it’s practically a weapon, isn’t it?
Since he’s already so conscious of his age-related odor, it would be nice if he could think of the more fundamental issue.
Maybe you could subtly steer him in that direction.

If you really feel you have to say something, you could pretend to be innocent and blurt out, “Whoa, this car reeks of Febreze!” the moment you get in.
