I didn’t write it myself, but I think it’s an excellent book by a wonderful sociologist, Shingo Sakatsume, who interviewed people in the field and portrayed papa-katsu accurately. I’ve come to regret not having myself and my employees read it thoroughly before requiring our members to do so. That said, *The Sociology of Papa-Katsu* can be somewhat difficult for me and my staff to read. The members’ stories are so real that it starts to feel like work. My personal recommendation is *An Introduction to Adultery Studies* by Shingo Sakatsume, published by Kobunsha Shinsho. Whenever I reread it, it feels like a treasure trove. If I’m going to continue working in the dating club business for another ten years, I’ll inevitably have to confront the question of how to deal with adultery—unfaithfulness. Is it acceptable to hurt our members’ wives or husbands? I still haven’t found an answer to that question. But the answer isn’t simple—that’s what this book seems to give us a glimpse of. I feel that the legality of dating clubs, their social acceptance, and employees’ awareness have improved to a certain extent. Still, when it comes to adultery, I can’t deny the feeling that it’s simply wrong. And I’m afraid that I myself might one day catch the disease called adultery, and that I might end up defiantly saying, “I like what I like!” In any case, ever since monogamy, a Christian norm, was introduced to Japan, I believe the persecution of “heretics” who fall outside that framework will continue. Just as gay people have finally come to be recognized socially as a minority, I hope that one day the existence of the adultery virus—and the need for a vaccine against it—will also be acknowledged.
