Lately, my struggle has been that I think about work most when I’m not working, but when I am working, I can’t seem to come up with any ideas.
It’s nice to know that answering questions here is part of my job.

In yesterday’s news, despite the hotel and ryokan industry being in such a difficult situation, one group that operates several ryokans had nearly full occupancy this summer, at about 90% of last year’s level. My family used to stay at one of their ryokans almost every year, so we couldn’t go this year because our summer vacation was shorter, but the footage brought back so many familiar memories that I felt warmly reassured.
I believe that an entrepreneur’s job is to make their strategy work, no matter what circumstances arise.
My own industry is also facing difficult times, but this summer, some locations posted record sales, and many achieved year-on-year increases.
For an owner, working visibly on-site can, in a sense, be an easy escape. Even if it’s only one hour a month, the real job—the foundation of what they should be doing—is to develop the next strategy and make it succeed. If I go into the field, work up a sweat, and help out, I lose track of time, and there’s no more enjoyable feeling than that.
However, doing so means I can’t take responsibility for the future of the families of the employees entrusted to me.
It may look like I’m taking it easy at a love hotel, but if the strategy succeeds and sales and income continue to grow without me having to work directly, I feel that ultimately it will also benefit the people around me.
Around the time the state of emergency was declared in April, there were reports that COVID-relief loans were taking a long time. In reality, the government had started moving quickly back in February, and if people had acted properly, loan approvals could have been issued within that month.
The government’s sustainability benefit was also processed quickly, and compared with the prefectures, even the various follow-up procedures, such as resubmissions, were handled fairly promptly.
Perhaps solutions come faster when you take action and devise measures yourself, but I wonder whether there still needs to be someone to direct our frustration—or serve as a target for criticism…

Whether people are resting or working, I’m always on the go—sometimes even holding it in and hurrying around at a jog. I’m an employee, after all.
I never cut corners when it comes to childcare or housework, so I’m always rushing around.
I’m a short sleeper, so I’m constantly running at full speed.
My goal is to live happily while never letting the people around me see even the slightest hint of that.

If a company can’t function unless you’re constantly doing everything yourself, you’re a third-rate business owner. I say that as a reminder to myself, too.
