This is how I interpret it:
In addition to the qualities generally associated with a gentleman, a gentlemanly man is someone who can do the things a woman hopes or wants a man to do for her.
And conversely, a woman who is worthy of such a man is someone who can do the things a man hopes or wants a woman to do for him.
When you put it that way, it’s pretty difficult for either of us to live up to, isn’t it? (tears)
