I don’t know whether he was really a client, or whether you were actually being mocked, but I think it’s foolish to believe that simply being a client means people won’t look down on you.
I also think it’s cowardly to use “the client” as a substitute for “yourself” in the argument.

Seriously, though, bragging about the number of offers you make might have a greater economic impact than bragging about your allowance. There’s real value in getting all kinds of responses: supportive, critical, corrective, disapproving, and simply people sharing their thoughts.
