Aren’t wealthy people from well-bred families usually quite humble? They don’t brag.
It really makes me think that upbringing matters. You can’t hide where you come from.
For the record, I grew up in a typical middle-class family.
Our usual family restaurants were Gusto and Jonathan’s.

An article from around 2016 says:
“According to a Cabinet Office survey, nine out of ten Japanese people still consider themselves middle class. There is even something like an ideology of ‘a society where everyone is middle class.’”
It also says:
“Whenever poverty becomes a visible issue in Japan, there are always people who say, ‘But Japanese people are still prosperous because they can do things like ○○.’ And when someone says, ‘I’m personally affected by poverty,’ others berate them, saying, ‘Get a job! Work like your life depends on it!’”

I guess it really is a sign of the times—or is Japan as a whole becoming poorer?
A world where the middle class eats at Gusto.

You can sometimes really see the difference between people who have received plenty of affirmation from those around them and people who haven’t.
People who haven’t been affirmed much often seem to have difficulty taking others’ words in a positive way.
If they feel that no one understands them, they naturally tend to brag more, just as the question suggests.
By contrast, people who receive affirmation from those around them seem more comfortable putting themselves down or even pretending to be silly.
