Before asking “why,” I think it would be better to consider whether the story is actually true and why such a story came up in the first place.
If the original premise is wrong, there won’t be an answer to “why.”
Also, if the male member said that he caught an STI, people would naturally assume he wasn’t using protection, so he himself may be the source.
If he met three women during a business trip to Tokyo and caught it from one of them, there’s a good chance he was the one who infected the other two.
