I’m already 24. Is it too late to start looking for a marriage partner? A lot of the girls who work in nightlife get married young, so seeing the people around me leaves me feeling anxious night after night. Customers tell me things like, “A woman’s value only lasts until she’s 30,” and it’s really making me panic. I want to believe that isn’t true, but is youth really that important? I want to get married soon, yet I hate myself for not being able to find someone.

> You’re already 24. > I think you should start looking into marriage. Even if you do start, there’s no guarantee you’ll find someone right away—and even if you do find a good person, you can’t exactly get married the next day(笑) I’ve heard that the human body starts aging around the age of 20, and once people reach their 50s, some develop illnesses or even pass away. Given that reality, when you consider marriage, having your first child, and raising children before turning 30, I can’t help but think that getting married and having children while your genes are still healthy and your body is still at its peak might be the sensible choice.

Marriage is something that comes after—or somewhere along the way to—many other things. If you make it your goal, you may end up making the wrong decisions. I know several people around me who made girls from the nightlife scene their girlfriends and helped them transition into daytime jobs. But in the end, they’re still living well by relying on someone else, so it might be better to first develop some kind of skill that allows you to support yourself. You’re still only 24. You can try anything. There’s still plenty of time to make your future brighter. Akari

Back in the Showa era, women were compared to Christmas cakes: they were “sellable” up to age 24, but no one wanted them after 25. That was the thinking in the early 1980s. Times have changed a lot since then. The idea that “a woman’s value lasts only until 30” belongs to people from the early Heisei era—or perhaps the very tail end of the Showa generation. I’ll say it again: that’s not the world we live in anymore. For someone like you, I recommend this book: “72, Today Is the Best Day of My Life” (Maye Musk) It’s written by the mother of Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla. I’m sure it will help resolve whatever you’re struggling with right now. Though I haven’t read it myself yet. Taro

I once saw a 21-year-old looking for a marriage partner, but people apparently doubted whether she was genuinely serious because she seemed too young—like she was only doing it for fun. At 24, though, I think you’re fine as you are. That said, married life is nothing but hell, so you’ll have more fun staying single for life. I’m never getting married.

I looked it up online, and apparently 26 is the age when both men and women are most likely to get married, so I don’t think it’s too late to start looking for a partner now. From what I can tell from the data, the percentage of people who get married drops sharply after 35. Also, speaking only about people around my age, myself included, I think there are more cases of people marrying someone around their own age—within one or two years—or someone younger by three years or more. So, while I do think youth is one important factor, I don’t think it’s the only thing that matters. And I feel your client was being rather rude in the way they put it. I’m sorry to judge based on just your question, but I get the feeling that if you look for a partner with that kind of mindset, you’re unlikely to find someone particularly good. (Though defining what makes someone “good” is difficult.)

I’m already in my late twenties—what people call “around thirty”—but I’m still not worried about marriage at all… lol At 24, you’re still at an age when you probably want to enjoy yourself, so why do you feel so strongly about getting married? Is it because all your friends in the nightlife industry are gradually getting married? Because people tell you that you have to do it by 30? Even if you rush into marriage for reasons like those, I don’t feel it will lead to a good outcome. And an unplanned shotgun wedding would be even worse. (Sorry if that offended anyone.) Please don’t rush—take your time and find someone wonderful♪

Recently, while we were out, my wife linked arms with me and posed for a photo together, which our daughter took. It’s heartwarming when you occasionally see an older married couple or long-term partners holding hands at a tourist spot, isn’t it? I’d love for us to be like that in another 15 years. After all, marriage isn’t the goal—the goal is to build a happy life together afterward. So there’s no need to get married until you find someone you can share that kind of life with.

I’m Potassium, one of the female members. What is the purpose of getting married for you, exactly? Has getting married itself become the goal? The client who made that comment was basically saying, “A woman’s only appeal is her youth,” right? Being young is a path everyone has walked and anyone can walk. It only goes one way. It’s not some special path. If you already have things—work or hobbies—that make you think, “I’m working hard at this!” or “This is what I want to do!” then I think you’re an attractive woman who’s creating a unique path in life that isn’t defined by your youth. So I don’t think it would be too late to choose marriage when a man you truly want to marry comes along. As an aside, if someone said that to me, I’d probably reply: “What determines a man’s value? Don’t tell me you’re going to say financial stability or something. If so, you’d better spend more on me, or you’ll lose all your value as a man! You’ll be a dead coelacanth! Actually, the coelacanth might be worth more. 😝” So I think you’re a genuinely sweet woman for taking the question so sincerely! I want to become a coelacanth whose very existence has value, too. That’s just my personal opinion.

If that’s how you feel, you should start looking for a marriage partner as soon as possible. You’re probably the type of person who feels anxious unless you’re married, so I don’t think you’ll be free of that anxiety until you experience marriage at least once—even if it turns out to be an awful one. So start looking sooner and marry someone. That will make your doubts disappear—at least for a moment. However, after that, you’re bound to start wondering things like, “Did I really choose the right person?” or “Why do I still feel unfulfilled?” Even though it’s your life, you’re asking other people, “Should I start looking for a marriage partner?” That means you’re living according to other people’s values. If you continue like that, you’ll remain plagued by anxiety and dissatisfaction no matter what you do.

You’re only 24! Why do you want to get married so badly? What are you planning to get married for? Are you getting married for the sake of clients who say, “A woman’s value only lasts until she’s 30”? I’m sure that’s not the case. Everyone has different values when it comes to marriage, and I don’t think marriage is everything in life. When it comes to marriage, patience and the ability to put up with things may be more important than youth, but I can’t say for sure. It might be a good idea to think once again about who you want to marry and why. There’s plenty of happiness to be found without getting married, and there’s also happiness that comes from being married. I think it’s different for everyone.

When you say “night work”… you mean it’s something you can still do, not that you accidentally got pregnant, right? And you’re still only 24—you’re not “already” too old. If you really want children that badly, you can have them around 30. Any man who says a woman’s worth only lasts until 30 doesn’t understand women’s value. He’s just an immature kid. There’s no need to rush. Have fun, and take your time figuring out who’s right for you.

I think it’s still too soon. Among women who work in the nightlife industry, I often see those who marry young end up as single mothers after having children. Aside from childbirth, I don’t think youth is particularly important. Marriage is a means, not an end, so I think it’s best not to lose sight of that.
