Even if the conversation flows, don’t you feel embarrassed having afternoon tea with an older man on a date?

Not at all. I’ve gone for afternoon tea with my dating partners several times. I have quite a sweet tooth myself, but I’d feel embarrassed going alone, so sometimes I go with a dating partner. Is there really anything wrong with an older man liking sweets?

I’ve always wanted to try afternoon tea at a hotel. It’s expensive, so I’ve never been… but if someone invited me, I’d be delighted to go! I don’t think anyone else is really paying attention to other people anyway, so if it’s somewhere you won’t run into anyone you know, I say enjoy it. I think it’s lovely to be able to go somewhere like that on a date.

This is a question from a man, right? If you feel embarrassed, why not go for afternoon tea in a private room? If the woman requests it, I’m happy to meet in a private room.

Opinions among the respondents here vary, so I think it depends on the person. But since you’re asking as a male member, I assume your partner probably invited you. If so, you’ll stand out more if you’re shy, so please make an effort to dress appropriately for the occasion!

I don’t think it’s embarrassing. Do you mean you’re embarrassed that people around you might think you’re doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? I’m not that interested in what other people think, so I don’t worry about it. And even if they do think I’m doing papa-katsu, my reaction is simply, “So what?” That’s their assumption, I haven’t bothered anyone, and they’re people I’ll probably never see again. I don’t care!! I just feel grateful that I get to have enjoyable conversations and eat delicious, beautiful food!!

Embarrassing? That’s just you being overly self-conscious. The other person doesn’t think anything of it.

I wish they’d think that way. Seriously… You only go to places a woman really wants to visit, right…? I can’t help being self-conscious too. Especially when it’s afternoon tea… There’s no way a guy would actually want to go somewhere like that, and you can’t even look around… You feel so out of place that you can’t carry on a conversation. (Even if you weren’t a papa, you’d still stand out like crazy.) All you can do is wait for the time to pass… I don’t even want to eat that much… Well, if you look at it from the opposite perspective, you could say it’s a place you’d never go with your papa… It’s almost like a fairytale space where you feel like a princess… (If it’s afternoon tea at a city hotel, I wouldn’t mind at all, though.) I can’t even imagine what people think of me there—I just want to escape as soon as possible.

In Japan, it would probably feel embarrassing even if you weren’t with an older man. That said, afternoon tea at London’s Kensington Hotel might help take the edge off the awkwardness. Then, by the time you’ve strolled through Kensington Gardens and toured Kensington Palace, you’ll probably have forgotten all about feeling embarrassed. Highly recommended! Just don’t forget to book Kensington Palace in advance.

Of course, I’m the one who feels more embarrassed. But why, oh why, do the women I date hardly seem embarrassed at all?

I’d feel bad if women around us started thinking, “Isn’t she doing papa-katsu?” so I would never go somewhere as open and public as afternoon tea. If we did go, I’d have her bring a female friend so the three of us could enjoy afternoon tea together. Also, putting that aside, aren’t the things served at afternoon tea incredibly high in calories? I can’t eat them. I don’t want to. They’d make my stomach stick out. Whether she’s had her spots removed, gotten full-body hair removal, undergone cosmetic treatments, or taken care of her breath, if her stomach is sticking out, it ruins the whole impression of cleanliness.

Personally, I don’t see what’s embarrassing about having tea with someone. But I also think everyone has different feelings about it.
