If a man chooses a woman he’s not genuinely attracted to because people envy him when he’s seen with her, is he likely to lose interest and end things once his vanity is satisfied?

I’m in my 30s and new to the club. Of course, it depends on the male member’s appearance and overall quality, but I think most of the women registered here probably don’t want to be seen together in public too much. Some women do prefer noticeable date plans, like shopping, but if the man’s goal includes “showing her off” and he wants to go on conspicuous outdoor dates in crowded places, I feel there are quite a few women who would dislike that. If that’s how he feels, wouldn’t it be better for the man to hold back a little? I think it’s perfectly fine to keep things discreet and meet somewhere out of sight.

I’m だて◎ゆめ, a male member. Like everyone else here, I don’t choose women so I can show them off and make people jealous when we’re out together. So I’ve never actually walked around with one. When we need to move somewhere, we keep some distance between us(笑).

I’m a male member, BB7. I agree with the other answers, but I think you’re usually the only one who believes people are envious when you walk around with her. From everyone else’s perspective, most of these couples probably look ridiculous and uncool. (Though if the man is model-level handsome, they can make a striking pair.) Pride and vanity are fine as long as they make the person feel satisfied, so other people’s opinions don’t really matter. But no matter how beautiful your partner is, unless there’s some added value beyond that, won’t you eventually get bored or feel empty and end up parting ways?

This is Mac, the column writer. Just a quick follow-up. I see—once you reach Saito-san’s level, I guess that’s how things turn out... It’s a world I’m not familiar with, so this was quite eye-opening. Thanks.

I’m Saito, the columnist♪ Um… I simply don’t meet people I’m not attracted to in the first place. It’s a waste of time. > If you chose a woman so people would envy you when you walked around with her I don’t really think about that anymore, but every now and then I do see someone and think, “Wow, he’s with someone prettier than I am.” (Not at places on the level of the Ritz, though.) When that happens, I honestly take it as inspiration to look for an even more wonderful woman. As for the other 90%, they’re exactly as Mac said—just plain creepy. lol You only find them in places where you think, “Wow, this is a classy place,” don’t you? Somehow. Apparently, one particular app even lists restaurants recommended for papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan)? (If anyone knows which one I mean, please tell me. I’ve forgotten.) I once ran into what seemed to be a papa-katsu couple there, but the man was nowhere near the level you’d expect to call it papa-katsu. He was honestly pathetic. (It was my first time seeing a business card from a major corporation with no title on it.) By the end, the woman had blended right into our conversation. I think it really depends on the place.
