The purpose of that is twofold: ① to weed out prank questions and pointless, chatty questions, and ② to let other respondents know the questioner’s background based on their past questions, so they can give more appropriate advice.
The reason ① is necessary is that I welcome people who have genuinely struggled with something and come here for help. I believe that’s the very reason this Q&A site exists.
