If I feel we’re not a good match, is it okay to give her 5,000 yen on the spot and end the meeting?

It would be helpful if you could mention in your profile—or have the staff tell her—that you’ll call exactly on time. That way, the choice is left to the woman: whether to call a few minutes early or decline the offer altogether. Men who make a fuss about things like that are probably demanding in other ways too, so I personally wouldn’t want to accept the offer. Even if I were briefly annoyed by meeting up only to leave right away, I think I’d ultimately feel it was for the best in the long run. Marika

If you’re only going to give her ¥5,000, you’re better off not joining a club. When it comes to women, money spent isn’t wasted. At a club, you shouldn’t send a woman home with less than ¥10,000. And don’t get into the habit of judging people by their price.

Judge it by whether you’d be disappointed if a woman did the same thing to you. You clear your schedule for the date, reserve a prix fixe dinner at a restaurant, dress up, and wait nervously for her until the agreed time. Then she takes one look at you and says, “We’re not a match, so I’m leaving.” How would you feel? Wouldn’t you think, “What about all this suddenly freed-up time, the cancellation fee, and my feelings?!” Women also clear their schedules, spend time and money on things like salons and beauty treatments, and wait with a mix of anxiety and excitement. Being handed just 5,000 yen at that point would only make them feel sad. Money given because you decide you’re not a match isn’t transportation money or an allowance—it’s a severance payment. You could also call it compensation for the damage caused. Unless you pay a reasonably substantial severance amount, things probably won’t go well for you in the future. It’s me.

You carefully reviewed her photos and profile before making the offer, didn’t you? Some girls take time off work to meet you. If you only offer 5,000 yen, they may well be upset and think, “I shouldn’t have taken the day off.”

People won’t like you if you come across as stingy! Since it’s papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), even if you think it’s a waste or you’re not really in a position to spend, you should at least pretend you have the means, haha. Oh, me? I don’t make offers when I’m already seeing someone, since I don’t have that kind of leeway, haha.

Do you mean that if he calls exactly at the scheduled meeting time and you feel you’re not a good match, you can give him ¥5,000 on the spot and end the meeting? I’m with SALON myself, so I don’t make phone calls, but I usually wait nearby about 30 minutes before the appointment. I leave with plenty of time to spare so I can still make it if the train is delayed or something comes up. If I were going to call, I’d probably wait until the scheduled time and then call. A lot of men are busy, so I imagine it would be inconvenient if I called before the appointment and they happened to be with someone else. So rather than deciding he’s not a good match just because he calls right on time, why not talk to him first? Even if you still feel you’re not a good fit, it simply means you won’t meet a second time. I do think transportation money is ultimately at the man’s discretion, but of course I prepare in various ways for the day and make sure I look my best, so I’m always grateful and happy when he gives a little extra. One dress costs around ¥20,000. I’d appreciate it if you could keep that in the back of your mind.

Even if you decide to part ways right then and there, I think 10,000 yen would be better. With only 5,000 yen, there’s a good chance the club will receive negative feedback.

Personally, I do think that attitude is pretty rude, but it’s not a problem. Just be aware that acting that way could get you negative feedback. Also, I think it’s better to provide the transportation allowance upfront. By the way, didn’t you just claim to be a male member in your 40s?
