Katakana feels formal and a bit stiff, doesn’t it? Men tend to choose it, but sometimes women use it in a more playful, twisted way too. I once met a woman through a dating club whose LINE name was her first name written in katakana. She was unusual in all sorts of ways, and I liked that about her. Hiragana, on the other hand, gives a softer, more approachable impression. But on this Q&A site, there are lots of quirky and borderline questions, so maybe more people go with katakana because they approach things with a slightly sardonic attitude rather than trying to seem friendly. Who knows, though.
I chose this name because I like thoroughly ordinary names. I felt it suited me perfectly: completely average, utterly unremarkable, with no distinctive character whatsoever—like a stone by the roadside—and so bland and boring that my entire existence is mundane. Incidentally, Taro is pronounced “TAH-roh,” but please really roll the R. And of course, put the emphasis on the R. I’d be delighted if you pronounced it with the kind of energy a rapper would bring. If you could make the explosive T sound sexy, I might even send you a counter-offer. Nasal plosives are pretty enticing, aren’t they?

I use my real first name as my SALON name.
That said, I use hiragana for my given name and a different surname.
I was actually debating whether to go with “Rin,” but since I have my name displayed on LINE, I thought it might be confusing after exchanging contact information—like, “Who was that again?”
So I decided to use “Rin” as my respondent name instead!! There’s no deeper meaning to it.
