A question about table manners.

Good manners mean not drawing attention to yourself. They’re subtle and natural—in short, you don’t make the other person feel self-conscious. Bad manners make someone uncomfortable. Whether it’s the way you use your chopsticks, the smacking noises you make while chewing, resting your elbows on the table, or fiddling with your phone, I think it’s a problem if the other person feels uncomfortable. On the other hand, I don’t think perfect etiquette to the point of making someone feel intimidated really counts as good manners, either. This is somewhat unrelated, but I don’t like women who pick up yakitori with chopsticks to eat it. Marika

I wasn’t there at the time, so I can’t say exactly, but I imagine she was an elegant, mature woman who had good table manners and genuinely enjoyed both the food and the conversation. That said, women in papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) tend to be fairly young on average, so I don’t think it’s common to expect that level of sophistication. Personally, I’m perfectly happy as long as she simply enjoys the food and conversation normally. > I was disappointed by her bad manners.
