It’s my first date—would a suit be okay? Or would something a little more casual be better?

I don’t think wearing a suit will be a problem. Just make sure you look clean and well-groomed—your dress shirt is neat, your shoes aren’t worn out, and so on!

From a woman receiving an allowance, any clothes or shoes are fine. If you’re wearing a suit, that’s more than good enough.

If you’re an office worker meeting for a date on a weekday, I think a suit is perfectly fine. Some women even find men in suits attractive. Weekends are actually more difficult, though. If you show up dressed too much like you’re going to work, they’ll ask, “Were you working today!?” I once met a woman in a hotel lobby after an intense gym session, so I showed up wearing a T-shirt. Luckily, things continued for quite a while with her, but after we got closer, she gave me a hard time about it, saying, “I wasn’t sure what to make of what you were wearing when we first met.” (Laughs) Honestly, if you’re a guy who isn’t sure how to put together a nice casual look, I think it’s safer to play it safe and wear a suit. I think it depends on the woman’s background and preferences, the date’s location and time, and your age and overall vibe. That’s what “TPO”—the time, place, and occasion—is all about, don’t you think? So you’ve never been in an arrangement before, which is why you came up with that bizarre theory—“the larger the allowance, the more transactional the relationship”—and posted something straight out of an erotic novel. For starters, I think women would respond better to you if you worked on being less creepy.
