A question for fellow PJ girls: Do you ever talk about papa-katsu with your boyfriend? Whenever I’m out on a date with mine, we often see what looks like couples doing papa-katsu all over town, so it sometimes comes up as, “Oh, that’s papa-katsu, lol.” I’ve been doing papa-katsu since I was a teenager, but of course I keep it a secret from my boyfriend. Both of us grew up in wealthy families and attended single-sex schools through middle and high school, so he thinks I’m a refined young lady with nothing to do with papa-katsu. In reality, my family runs a mid-sized company and I’m the president’s daughter, but I’ve had a pretty active love life since high school, and papa-katsu was just an extension of that.

The other day, I was having afternoon tea at a hotel with my boyfriend, and there were so many papa-katsu couples around that they were impossible not to notice. We ended up talking about how everyone seemed to be doing papa-katsu. Do you PJ girls generally try to avoid bringing up papa-katsu?

Besides, the person asking has already decided to keep it a secret from her boyfriend, so shouldn’t it be irrelevant what anyone else does?

If you’re doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), you naturally notice other people’s papa-katsu. But if you’re not interested in it, you won’t pay attention to it, and the idea of papa-katsu probably won’t even cross your mind—especially if it’s something you’d never consider doing. So if you’re with your boyfriend, there’s no need to bring up papa-katsu.

I’m open about it with my papa (a male supporter), but I don’t tell my boyfriend. It doesn’t really come up, and there’s no benefit to bringing it up anyway.
