I’ve been enjoying mostly smooth, pretend romances through papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). Some women had a strongly transactional attitude, which left me feeling empty, but most treated me like their partner while we were together, allowing us to spend fulfilling time together. However, about three of them developed genuine feelings for me after we had been seeing each other for more than six months. I ended the relationships by telling them that my wife had found out, as I felt they had become a burden to me, but I never feel good about how things end. I’ve reached sixty now, so I think it’s less likely to happen from here on, but could you advise me on how to prevent the other person from developing serious feelings, and what the best way to handle it would be if it does happen?

> How to keep her from developing serious feelings I think it would be a good idea to make it clear from the start that you’ll end things if the relationship becomes too emotionally intense. Still, it’s pretty remarkable that a woman would develop serious feelings for you. You must be quite the gentleman. > If that happens, please let me know the best way to handle it. I think it would be best to end things if she says she doesn’t want any money. That way, even without giving her a clear explanation, she’ll probably understand that this was where things went wrong.

I’m in my 60s, but I’ve never had anything that felt like a romantic relationship, so I think I’ll be fine from here on out. I just need to make sure I’m never called a “creepy old man.”

I think it’s better to shift from falling in love to truly loving each other. Being lovey-dovey is nice, but when things start accelerating, it can be dangerous. Before long, you’ll overshoot. I think it’s important to set a cruising speed, and once you reach it, ease off the throttle. If you can reach, within three months, a relationship that combines the sense of security and slight boredom you’d expect after dating for three or four years, it seems to become fairly stable. If you feel things are getting too heated, the best thing is to space out your meetings a little. Also, subtly brush off exchanges that feel like an exchange of affection instead of keeping the rally going. I suppose. Taro

As for papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), you’ll be fine as long as you have a serious girlfriend separately. That said, if you’re not having any trouble after things ended with the person you’re asking about, it’s questionable whether she was really serious about you. When a woman genuinely falls for you, getting her to break up with you can be nearly impossible… I know from experience—I’ve even had a request filed to prevent a marriage registration from being accepted.

What kinds of things did they do that made you feel they had genuinely fallen for you? And over how many years did this happen? If three people developed serious feelings over ten years, I could see that being possible, but if it was three people in three years, I’d find that a little questionable. Sorry. For example, I’ll say things to one of my papas like, “I’m so lonely I could die” just because we haven’t been able to meet for a little while, or, “What kind of house do you live in? Show me on Google Earth♡” But I don’t actually want to see his house, I wouldn’t really die from loneliness, and I certainly don’t want him to leave his wife. My papa knows I’m joking, so for now he hasn’t broken things off by saying I’m “too much.” However, if three people became stalkers within a year, then your communication style really may be unusual. Maybe you’re doing something that makes them dependent on you, such as psychologically manipulating them or giving them too much allowance. It could be one of those things.

Perhaps date multiple people without hiding it from the start, keep the frequency fairly low, and hand over the allowance each time with something like, “Thanks again for today!” to emphasize the transactional nature of the arrangement. Though there’s also a chance she may treat you as too much of a transaction. Marika

I think the best way to keep the other person from getting serious is to see each other at longer intervals.
