My papa’s birthday is at the end of this month, and I feel like he’s expecting a present. We’ve been seeing each other for a year, but it’s a fairly casual relationship—we only meet once every three or four weeks. For my birthday, he only gave me an extra ¥10,000 in cash. Should I give him a present?

If he’s expecting something, it might be better to give him something—like a cake, chocolates, or snacks you can enjoy together in the room. Even a small gift might encourage him to give you something extra on your next birthday, in addition to your allowance. If you don’t give him anything, you might lose out on that birthday bonus next time.

If he’s expecting something, I think he’d be fine with a gift that could potentially be noticed—such as if he doesn’t have a wife. So something worn where it can be seen, like a tie, might be a good choice. As for the budget, the usual rule is to give back twice the value. But since that means the man gives something worth twice what he received from the woman, if you received a ¥10,000 gift, I think something costing up to ¥5,000 would be fine. Of course, it’s the thought that counts, but if he’s the type who expects a gift, I feel he’d be happier with something visible to those around him. He seems like the kind of man who would say, “My girlfriend gave me this.”

For a birthday gift in return for your papa, something other than half the allowance would be better. Treat him to lunch instead. Since no cash changes hands, it’s reassuring for both of you.

Getting only an extra 10,000 yen for your birthday is pretty disappointing, isn’t it… Poor you. Even if Carlos Ghosn is a low-paying papa, there’s no need to cut him off—but you don’t have to put in your full effort either. Give him a gift worth 5,000 yen or less, with absolutely no heart in it, and make him happy.

Since it’s a return gift, I think something worth about a fraction of what you received would be appropriate. In the end, a gift is about the thought behind it. I haven’t even told him my birthday, so I don’t expect anything at all…
