For those who keep or are kept in an apartment, how much are you given? How long did it take before you left—or didn’t you?

I’m Aya, a female member. I can’t really recommend it, but I often hear of arrangements involving an apartment’s rent plus ¥150,000–¥200,000 for living expenses. A beautiful woman I know is supported by the president of a major financial company. Apparently, they meet about twice a month, and she receives ¥200,000 plus rent. They do argue sometimes, but they’ve remained happily in love for around ten years. In my case, it’s rent, ¥200,000, and a credit card—but I don’t use the card that much because I feel bad making my papa pay for everything.

He says, “I’ll pay your apartment rent,” and gives her several tens of thousands of yen a few times a year—about half the rent, totaling roughly ¥200,000 for several months. There’s no separate allowance, and his relationship with his longtime girlfriend, who is also his ex-wife, has continued for decades, with them seeing each other on weekends. How long it lasts depends much more on factors other than money. The more money becomes the basis of the relationship, the more likely it is that either person can suddenly cool off and change 180 degrees in an instant, especially after investing so much… —Paper Airplane

I give my ace and the former ace I got back together with money for their apartments in addition to their allowance, but I don’t think of it as keeping them under my wing. My ace gets a monthly allowance of 1 million yen, plus the apartment costs and retained earnings from my company. The former ace gets a monthly allowance of 500,000 yen plus the apartment costs. They’ve never run away from me, although I was the one who ended things with the former ace once. I never go to either of their apartments. We only meet about twice a month, and there are months when we don’t meet at all. At first glance, these may seem like large amounts, but compared with Mr. Yusaku Maezawa of ZOZO, who enjoys giving money away, if he were a Tyrannosaurus rex, I’d be an ant. No matter how hard I tried, I probably couldn’t catch up with him, but I’d like to give my PJ partners more money—and become able to give them more. Spending it on myself just isn’t that interesting. After about six months, it came out that I was occasionally seeing a handsome younger athlete, and the arrangement ended before a year had passed. It was in the suburbs of Yokohama: ¥150,000 for rent plus ¥150,000 in cash, for about ¥300,000 total. For reference, my salary at the time was just under ¥300,000 a month. This was 27 years ago. It wasn’t the amount of the allowance that caused the breakup, but the feeling of being constrained and having no freedom. I think it might work if the allowance were reasonably generous and there were a little more leeway—such as being allowed to see other people, as long as you didn’t bring them into the apartment. However, I’m firmly opposed to having either men or women rent an apartment for me. Please just give me that amount as an allowance instead. Marika

I’m Kazu, a male member. When I was in my thirties, I supported a woman solely by covering the rent on her apartment. She never ran off and was very attentive and caring, but she wasn’t really my type to begin with, so I ended up being the one to suggest breaking up before we’d even been together for two years. She was a genuinely nice person, and I gave her nearly six months’ notice, so we parted without any problems. Still, I think it was quite a lucky outcome. That’s why I’m thinking of giving the allowance in cash from now on.
