For women who are often complimented on their looks, how do you respond? Should I be modest?

Maezawa from the president’s office here with an answer as well. Lately, it seems that people who are popular don’t even bother with false modesty anymore. When complimented, they just reply, “I get told that a lot,” in an almost annoyed way. I feel like times have changed. Maybe saying that is simply a way to shut the other person up.

I’m Aya, a female member. I’ll give a shy little giggle and look genuinely happy—sometimes I’ll even say out loud, “I’m so happy.” I do that because I feel it suits my personality, though of course I adjust my response depending on the situation.

Isn’t it fine to just respond naturally? If someone told you that you should be modest, would you say, “Oh, not at all~”? That sounds so fake. Your response to a compliment depends on who’s giving it, what they’re complimenting, the atmosphere, and so on. Even just saying “That’s not true” or “Thank you” can come across like completely different words depending on your tone of voice, facial expression, gestures, and everything else. Now that I’m writing this, I realize I don’t consciously think about it while I’m doing it. In the end, what matters is creating an atmosphere where the man feels glad he complimented you. I’ve lost track of what I’m even saying, but I guess I just respond naturally, in whatever way feels right for the moment. Marika

I’m Fuu, a column writer. How you respond depends on things like: - How much you like the other person - Whether you want them to like you - Whether you want to build a good relationship For example: If you want them to like you: “Thank you, that makes me happy!” “Really? That’s the first time anyone’s said that to me! I’m so happy!” If you don’t want to hear it, or they keep saying it and it’s getting annoying: “Yeah, I get told that a lot.” “Good for you—you got to meet someone like me.” ↑They’ll probably stop saying it after that. And so on. Think about the kind of relationship you want with them, your own personality, and theirs, then decide what would be the best thing to say.

Even if you try to be modest… “Thanks. Of course you are—obviously, right?” Or… “Anything is fine…” “You’re worth 100 million, aren’t you?” Something like that… Paper Airplane
